CNC Engraving on Wood — Live Edge Oak Slab Project

Custom CNC Wood Engraving on Customer-Supplied Timber

When a customer sends you a piece of timber they have prepared themselves, trust matters. In this case, the slab arrived from Shrewsbury. It was a live edge oak piece with deep cracks and natural voids that made it structurally vulnerable. So, our first job was not engraving. It was making sure the slab could withstand the machining process without losing the character that made it special in the first place. This project is a good example of what bespoke CNC engraving on wood actually involves when the timber has history and irregularity to it.

Preparing a live edge oak slab for CNC engraving using resin stabilisation on customer supplied timber.

Stabilising the Live Edge Oak Slab

First, we inspected the slab carefully. The cracks were significant enough that machining without preparation would have risked splitting the timber under the pressure of the CNC bit. So, we wiped down the surface and taped the reverse to prevent resin bleed-through. Then we filled the cracks with clear epoxy resin to reinforce the structure while keeping the natural grain fully visible. Once the resin cured, we flattened the slab to ensure the CNC engraving would sit at a consistent depth across the entire piece.

Only once the slab was structurally stable and perfectly flat did we move to the engraving stage.

Mapping and Programming the Artwork

The customer supplied the quote as a digital file. We imported it into our CNC software and mapped the layout carefully around the natural shape of the slab.

Live edge pieces are irregular by nature. As a result, alignment matters far more than it does on a standard machined board. We programmed the toolpaths to ensure the lettering was clean, evenly spaced and engraved at a consistent depth throughout. This stage required careful planning to make sure the finished layout matched exactly what the customer had in mind.

CNC Engraving Process

Once everything was programmed, we secured the slab firmly to the CNC bed and began the engraving. We used a precision engraving bit and monitored depth and surface consistency throughout to maintain crisp, clean detail across the full width of the piece.

After engraving, we sanded the surface again to remove any minor tooling marks. Then we filled the engraved lettering with black epoxy resin for contrast. Once the black resin cured fully, we sanded back to achieve a smooth, flush finish. The lettering sat sharp and clean against the natural oak grain.

Finishing with Danish Oil

To complete the project, we applied Danish oil across the full surface. This brought warmth to the timber, enhanced the natural grain and allowed the resin-filled cracks to blend naturally into the overall character of the piece.

Danish oil also provides a durable finish suitable for interior display, so the slab looks as good in ten years as it does today.

Hanging System and Delivery

Finally, we fitted a concealed hanging rail to the reverse of the slab. This gives even weight distribution and secure wall mounting, making installation straightforward for the client. The slab measured approximately 64cm wide by 43cm high and 4cm thick, so correct support was important.

We completed the full project within a two-week turnaround from receiving the slab to return shipping. Everything was carefully packaged before being sent back to the client in Shrewsbury.

What the Client Said

I had a live-edge oak slab that I’d prepared myself and needed someone skilled enough to handle the engraving without damaging the character of the wood. KMP Carpentry & Joinery have been brilliant from start to finish. Communication has been spotless — clear, friendly, and always keeping me updated.
But the real standout is the craftsmanship.

The engraving is crisp and perfectly aligned, the depth is clean, and they’ve managed to keep the natural grain and features of the oak front and centre. You can tell real care went into setting the piece up, securing it properly, and working with the curves of the live edge rather than against them. The finish they’ve applied brings the grain out beautifully and gives the whole slab a proper, professional feel. It’s rare to find a small business that treats your project like their own, but these guys do.

Highly recommend, and I’ll definitely be using them again.
