Bespoke Dog & Stair Gates in Chatteris
Made-to-Measure Gates Designed to Fit Your Home Properly
This project involved designing, building and installing bespoke dog gates for a home in Chatteris, Cambridgeshire. The client needed a practical way to control access between rooms and stairs. Off-the-shelf options wouldn’t have fitted the space properly, so we made each gate made-to-measure instead. As a result, each gate works well in day-to-day use while still sitting naturally within the home.
Made-to-Measure Dog Gate Design
We designed each gate around its exact location, whether across a doorway or at the bottom of a staircase. This ensures a cleaner fit and more consistent proportions throughout the property. We used rough-sawn timber and built each frame using traditional mortise and tenon joints. Because of this, the gates are stronger and less likely to move over time compared to mass-produced alternatives.
Two of the gates include oak-veneered panels and solid oak rails. This helps them match the existing joinery, resulting in bespoke wooden dog gates that look like part of the home.
Oak Stair Gate With Glass Panel
For the stairs, we built a made-to-measure stair gate using solid oak with a toughened glass panel. This keeps the space feeling open while still acting as a secure barrier. At the same time, the glass allows light to pass through and avoids blocking sightlines, which is especially useful in tighter hallways or open-plan layouts. We fixed the glass in place using polished chrome clamps, so the detailing matches the rest of the fittings in the property.
As a result, this works well as a fitted safety gate without making the space feel closed off.
Fitted Dog Gate Installation
We installed each fitted dog gate into oak posts to create a strong and secure fixing point. This improves durability and keeps everything stable with regular use. We also used polished chrome hinges and sliding bolts throughout, so the finish stays consistent with the rest of the house. Everything was adjusted on site so each gate opens and fits properly. This is where a built-in dog gate has a clear advantage over standard pressure-fit options.
The end result is a set of custom dog gates that are strong, easy to use, and designed around how the client uses the space.
