Fitted Understairs Storage in March, Cambridgeshire

Bespoke Understairs Cupboards, Drawers and Shoe Storage

This project involved designing and building a fitted understairs storage unit for a home in March, Cambridgeshire. The space under the stairs had been mostly wasted. So, we designed a made-to-measure unit combining cupboards, built-in drawers and a dedicated shoe rack. We also fitted all doors with push-to-open catches for a clean, handleless finish.

The Brief

The client had a few specific things they needed the space to do. First, they wanted somewhere tidy to store shoes. Next, they needed to house their wifi router neatly out of sight. They also needed the unit to accommodate their washing machine, alongside extra drawer storage for everyday items.

Off-the-shelf solutions would not have worked here. The space had an awkward angled ceiling with specific width and depth requirements. As a result, a made-to-measure approach was the only way to make the space genuinely functional.

Design and Layout

We designed the unit around the exact dimensions of the space and the client’s specific needs. Then we divided the layout into four sections to make the most of every part of the available space.

On one side, we built a tall cupboard with internal shelving for shoes. This keeps footwear organised and out of sight. We also used this section to house the wifi router discreetly. Next to it, a separate section accommodates the washing machine behind a full-height door. Finally, we added a couple of built-in drawers for everyday storage.

Construction and Finish

We built the unit from moisture-resistant MDF, which suits understairs spaces well. We fitted all doors with push-to-open catches, so there is no hardware on show. As a result, the unit has a clean, handleless finish that looks neat and modern.

We left the doors undecorated and ready to paint. This gives the client full control over the final colour so the unit can match the rest of the room perfectly. Overall, the finished unit solves every storage problem the client came to us with.
