Bespoke Bi-Fold Doors in March, Cambridgeshire
Hardwood Bi-Fold Doors Designed to Solve a Real Space Problem
We designed, built and installed these bespoke internal bi-fold doors for a home in March, Cambridgeshire. The original doors between the lounge and kitchen opened too far into the room. As a result, there was very little space to move past when they were open. The client wanted to keep the separation between the two rooms without the everyday frustration of squeezing around an open door. To solve the problem, we built a set of hardwood bi-fold doors in sapele. We constructed each panel using traditional mortise and tenon joints and secured them with hardwood wedges. The result is a strong, well-made set of doors that folds neatly out of the way while allowing easy movement between the lounge and kitchen.

Solving the Original Space Problem
Before we started, the original doors swung deep into the lounge whenever someone opened them. In a busy household, this meant constantly working around a door that was technically open but still blocked the route between rooms.
The client wanted a solution that addressed the problem properly rather than simply working around it. Bi-fold doors were the obvious answer. However, they needed to be built well enough to operate smoothly and complement a well-finished home.

Solid Sapele Hardwood & Traditional Techniques
We chose sapele for this project because it is a dense, durable hardwood that performs well in joinery applications. While the client plans to paint the doors, sapele provides a strong and stable base.
We constructed each panel using mortise and tenon joints secured with traditional wedges. Joiners have used this method for centuries because it creates strong, reliable connections. The joints lock together mechanically rather than relying solely on glue or fixings. As a result, they provide excellent structural strength and help the doors stay square and true for years to come.

Hardware Chosen to Match the Home
The client selected the door hardware, choosing handles and fittings that matched those used elsewhere in the property.
We worked around their choice to ensure everything fitted neatly and operated smoothly. As a result, the finished doors feel like a natural part of the home rather than an obvious new addition.

A Space That Finally Works
With the new bi-fold doors in place, the space between the lounge and kitchen now works exactly as the client intended. The doors fold neatly out of the way, allowing easy movement between the two rooms. When needed, they also close fully to provide separation between the spaces.
On paper, it is a relatively simple change. However, it has made a noticeable difference to how the client uses the space every day.
What the Client Said
“Karl and his team did an excellent job completing a set of bespoke folding doors for our lounge/family rooms. These were classic joinery and finished to a very high standard. Almost a shame to paint them white to match the existing doors within our home. Thank you Karl for your planning and attention to detail. Would highly recommend.“
