Bespoke Bi-Fold Doors in March, Cambridgeshire
Made-to-Measure Sapele Bi-Fold Doors Between a Lounge and Kitchen
We designed, built and installed bespoke internal bi-fold doors in Cambridgeshire for a home in March. The original doors opened too far into the lounge, leaving very little space to move between the lounge and kitchen. The homeowners wanted to keep the option of separating the two rooms without the everyday frustration of doors blocking the walkway. To solve the problem, we built made-to-measure bi-fold doors from solid sapele using traditional mortise and tenon joinery. The new doors fold neatly to either side of the opening, making it much easier to move between the two rooms while still providing privacy when needed.

The Brief
The existing doors created an awkward layout. Whenever they were open, they swung into the lounge and partially blocked the route between the two rooms. As a result, moving between the kitchen and lounge became inconvenient, particularly in a busy household.
The homeowners did not want to remove the doors altogether. Instead, they wanted a practical solution that would save space without changing the character of the room. They asked us to create bespoke bi-fold doors that would fold neatly out of the way while complementing the style of their home.

Our Approach
After measuring the opening, we designed four-panel doors that fold neatly to either side of the doorway. This allowed the doors to take up much less space when open while still closing across the full width of the doorway.
We built each panel from solid sapele, a durable hardwood that is well suited to internal doors. We also used traditional mortise and tenon joints with hardwood wedges to create strong, stable door frames.
Large glass panels allow natural light to pass freely between the kitchen and lounge. As a result, both rooms still feel bright and connected, even when the doors are closed. The homeowners planned to paint the doors white to match the rest of their joinery. However, choosing solid sapele provides a strong, reliable base that is designed to last.

The Installation
Once the joinery was complete, we installed the new doors using a combination of hinged and sliding bi-fold hardware. Careful adjustment ensured all four panels aligned correctly, folded smoothly and closed neatly across the opening.
The homeowners also chose handles and ironmongery that matched the rest of the house. By incorporating these details into the installation, the finished doors feel like a natural part of the property.

The Finished Result
The new internal bi-fold doors have completely changed how the space works. When open, the panels fold neatly to either side of the doorway instead of projecting into the lounge. As a result, moving between the kitchen and lounge is much easier, while the rooms still feel connected.
When closed, the glazed panels provide privacy without blocking natural light. Meanwhile, the solid sapele construction and traditional mortise and tenon joinery give the doors the strength and stability needed for everyday use. Finished in white, the doors blend seamlessly with the modern interior and look as though they have always been part of the home.
What the Client Said
“Karl and his team did an excellent job completing a set of bespoke folding doors for our lounge/family rooms. These were classic joinery and finished to a very high standard. Almost a shame to paint them white to match the existing doors within our home. Thank you Karl for your planning and attention to detail. Would highly recommend.“
