Real Projects, Real Spaces — Built by KMP Joinery in Cambridgeshire
One of the most common things we hear from clients is that they have space they are not using well. This might be an awkward alcove, a cluttered understairs cupboard or a utility room that does not quite work. So, they come to us looking for something made-to-measure that solves the problem.
Fitted storage is one of those investments that changes how a home functions day-to-day. In this post, we are sharing some of our recent bespoke fitted storage projects from across Cambridgeshire. We hope they give you a few ideas for your own space.
Kitchen Alcove Cupboard with Boiler Housing
Alcoves in kitchens are often left underused. In many cases, they end up filled with furniture that does not quite fit. In this project, we built a bespoke fitted cupboard into a kitchen alcove that also needed to house the boiler discreetly.
The result is a clean, built-in unit that gives the kitchen back some much-needed storage space. The boiler is completely hidden behind a fitted door, so the whole room looks tidier. This is a good example of how fitted joinery can solve two problems at once.

Understairs Storage with Washing Machine, Drawers and Shoe Cupboard
Understairs spaces are some of the most underused areas in a home. Most people either leave them empty or fill them with items they cannot easily find later. When this client came to us, we wanted to make the space work properly for them.
We designed and built a bespoke understairs storage unit. It includes housing for the washing machine, a dedicated shoe cupboard and a set of drawers for everyday storage. Everything is fitted to measure, so there are no gaps or wasted corners. The finish is seamless and looks as though it has always been there.
This type of project is particularly popular right now. More people are choosing to improve their current home rather than move. Because of this, making underused spaces work properly is one of the most practical investments you can make.

Garden Room Shelving Unit with Decorative Display and Cupboard Storage
Garden rooms are a great addition to a home. However, they can quickly become cluttered if storage is not planned properly.
For this project, we built a fitted shelving unit that combines open display shelving with a closed cupboard section below for practical storage. The shelving is sized and spaced to suit the room, rather than using standard off-the-shelf dimensions. This makes a noticeable difference to how finished the space feels. Overall, it is a calm and functional unit that complements the garden room without dominating it.

Built-In Cloakroom Storage for Shoes and Coats
Cloakrooms and entrance hallways are high-traffic areas. Because of this, they often end up feeling cluttered. For this project, we built a fully fitted cloakroom storage unit designed around shoes and coats. The design includes hanging space, shoe storage and closed cupboards to keep everything organised and out of sight. As a result, the entrance feels calm and welcoming rather than chaotic.
Bespoke fitted storage in a cloakroom makes a noticeable difference. It is also often more straightforward to achieve than people expect.

Kitchen Alcove Shelving with Drawers and Doors
For this second kitchen alcove project, the brief was slightly different. The client wanted shelving at the top for display and easy access. Below that, they needed drawers and doors to keep everyday items hidden.
We built the unit to fit the exact dimensions of the alcove. We also planned the shelving height and drawer sizes around how the space is actually used. Fitted alcove storage works particularly well in kitchens. Everything has a place, so the room stays looking tidy.

Why Bespoke Fitted Storage Is Worth It
There are plenty of flat-pack and off-the-shelf storage options available. For some spaces, they work well. However, for alcoves, understairs areas and awkward rooms, bespoke fitted storage is usually the better choice.
Here is why clients often find it worthwhile:
- It fits perfectly: made-to-measure joinery fills the space fully, with no gaps or wasted depth.
- It looks built-in: a well-fitted unit feels like part of the house rather than something added later.
- It solves the actual problem: whether that is housing a boiler, fitting a washing machine or improving shoe storage.
- It adds lasting value: quality fitted storage lasts and improves how your home functions.
