Bespoke Under Stairs Storage Designed Around Everyday Living
The space beneath the stairs often becomes a place to store shoes, household items and everything else without a permanent home. As a result, even a tidy hallway can quickly feel cluttered. That was exactly the challenge for this homeowner in March, Cambridgeshire. They wanted to make better use of the available space while keeping the hallway clean, practical and easy to use every day.
Instead of trying to fit standard furniture into an awkward area, we designed, made and installed bespoke fitted under stairs storage. The finished design includes made-to-measure cupboards, built-in drawers and dedicated storage for shoes, utilities and everyday essentials. We also fitted push-to-open cupboard doors to create a clean, handleless finish.

The Brief
The client had several practical requirements. However, they also wanted the finished storage to look like it had always been part of the home. The new design needed space for shoes, a washing machine, the Wi-Fi router and electrical connections. In addition, they wanted extra drawer storage for everyday household items.
Standard furniture would have wasted valuable space beneath the staircase. That’s why we designed every cupboard and drawer around the exact shape of the opening. As a result, every section works hard while keeping the hallway looking clean and organised.
Making the Most of the Space
Every compartment has a specific purpose. So, the storage is simple to use and easy to keep organised.
A full-height cupboard provides shelving for shoes while concealing the Wi-Fi router and electrical connections. Meanwhile, a second cupboard hides the washing machine behind a matching door. This allows it to blend naturally into the rest of the fitted furniture. We then used the remaining space to create two large built-in drawers. These provide generous storage for everyday household items that would otherwise create clutter.
By giving every cupboard and drawer a clear purpose, we transformed an awkward space into practical bespoke under stairs storage that works for everyday life.
A Contemporary Finish
We made the entire unit from moisture-resistant MDF. As a result, it is well suited to a space that houses appliances such as a washing machine. To create a modern appearance, we fitted every cupboard and drawer with push-to-open mechanisms. Consequently, the handleless cupboard doors create clean, uninterrupted lines across the front of the joinery while remaining easy to open.
We fit the unit ready for painting. This allows the homeowner to choose a colour that complements the rest of the hallway. Although the finished storage looks simple, careful planning sits behind every detail. Every cupboard, drawer and shelf has a clear purpose, making the space practical as well as attractive.
The Final Result
The space beneath the stairs now works much harder than it did before. Shoes, laundry appliances, networking equipment and everyday household items all have their own place. As a result, the hallway feels tidier, more organised and easier to use.
Most importantly, the fitted under stairs storage feels like part of the original house. This project is a great example of how bespoke under stairs cupboards can transform an awkward space into valuable everyday storage.
