A Bespoke Handcrafted Oak Entrance
We designed and built this bespoke oak porch for a home in Chatteris, Cambridgeshire. Our client wanted an entrance that felt substantial, characterful and in keeping with the property. So, we handcrafted a custom oak porch using traditional joinery techniques. The result is a timeless entrance that will only improve with age.
Oak Selection & Joinery
We built this porch from 150 x 150mm green oak, chosen for its natural strength and rich texture. Each piece was hand-selected for grain quality and consistency. Not only does green oak have incredible structural integrity, but it also develops a beautiful silver-grey patina over time. This makes it a brilliant choice for a bespoke entrance porch that needs to look good for decades.
Traditional Framing Techniques
To frame the structure, we used mortise-and-tenon joints secured with drawbore pegs. This is a time-honoured approach to oak joinery, and for good reason. It allows the timber to expand and contract naturally, while keeping the frame strong and stable. We also crafted detailed rafters and fascias to follow the existing roofline of the property. As a result, the finished porch feels like it has always been there.
Workshop Pre-Assembly
Before delivery, we pre-assembled the full oak frame at our Cambridgeshire joinery workshop. This gave us the chance to check every joint, every angle and every fit before anything left the workshop. Only once everything passed our checks did we prepare it for installation. It is a step that takes extra time, but it means our clients get a carpenter-built porch that goes up cleanly and sits perfectly.
