Our Story

KMP began with Karl.

Karl started his carpentry and joinery career at 16 through a local apprenticeship in St Ives. He completed three years in craft carpentry and joinery, followed by advanced craft and craft machining — all City & Guilds trained.

He stayed with the same joinery company for 16 years. During that time, he worked across every part of the business: starting on the shop floor making and fitting, then moving into sales, estimating and project management. He measured on site, worked on bills of quantities, and managed jobs from the first conversation through to completion.

Running his own business was always in the back of his mind. When his children came along, that idea became a reality. He bought a van, took on his first job, and built KMP from the ground up.

What started as a one-person workshop has grown steadily into a respected local joinery business, built on the same principles Karl learned at 16: true craftsmanship, reliability, and pride in your work.

Where We Are Today

Today, KMP is very much a family business.

Karl now works alongside his children, which feels full circle. They were the reason he took the leap in the first place, so building the business together means more than just growth, it’s personal.

As a team, we combine traditional joinery skills with modern CNC machining in our Cambridgeshire workshop. This allows us to take on a wide range of work, from bespoke staircases and fitted cabinetry to bespoke engraved projects and small batch CNC work for commercial clients.

Our focus is on strengthening KMP as a trusted local joiner in Cambridgeshire, while continuing to grow our CNC machining services across the UK. All without losing the personal approach that got us here.

A Little Moment We’re Proud Of

A month after launching a small collection of personalised wooden pieces, our work was featured in The Cambs Times. This was a lovely surprise and a real highlight for our small family business. The article focused on our CNC engraving and the care that goes into each and every order.

Articles like this help us share our story a little wider and remind us why quality, honesty and good old-fashioned craftsmanship still matter.
