Tool Shop Fit-Out Project in March, Cambridgeshire

Commercial Shop Refurbishment to a Fixed Opening Date

We completed this shop fit out project for a tool retailer in March, Cambridgeshire. The aim was to transform an empty unit into a practical retail space that would be ready for the client’s opening day. The launch date was fixed, so every stage of the project had to be carefully planned and completed on schedule. The finished retail shop fit-out project included a new timber shopfront, bespoke retail counters, a slat wall display system, a mezzanine floor and a purpose-built timber staircase.

The Brief

The client needed a complete bespoke shop interior fit-out that made the best use of the available floor space. The layout had to work well for both staff and customers. It also needed durable counters, flexible product displays and extra storage.

Most importantly, everything had to be finished before the planned opening date. Careful scheduling and steady progress were essential throughout the project.

Our Approach

Before work began, we planned the layout around the way the business would operate every day. We considered customer flow, staff workspaces, stock storage and access to the new mezzanine level. This helped us make the best use of the available space.

Every major feature was built specifically for the premises. That included the shopfront, retail counters, display wall and staircase. As a result, each element fitted the building properly instead of relying on standard components. We also planned the sequence of work carefully. Structural elements were completed first, followed by the internal joinery and finishing details.

The Installation

We started by constructing and installing a new timber shopfront that worked alongside the existing roller shutter. The framework was built on site to achieve an accurate fit before adding the plywood panelling and glazed sections. Inside, we installed bespoke retail counters built from MDF with durable laminate worktops. Each counter included integrated storage and enough workspace for two members of staff, helping keep tools, paperwork and stock organised.

Next, we installed a slat wall storage system. This provides flexible merchandising space, making it easy to move displays as stock changes while keeping the shop tidy and easy to navigate. To create additional storage, we also constructed a mezzanine floor using structural timber joists and chipboard decking. Finally, we built a timber staircase on site to provide safe access while making efficient use of the available floor area.

The Finished Result

The completed tool shop refurbishment in March created a practical retail space ready for the client’s planned opening day. The bespoke counters provide durable work and storage areas, while the slat wall allows displays to change as new products arrive. Above, the mezzanine creates valuable extra space without extending the building.

By combining commercial joinery, structural timber work and careful project planning, we delivered a commercial fit-out project that supports the business both now and in the future.

I have used KMP services on many occasions over the last twenty years. I have used them for work on both my business premises and home. They are very professional in their approach and their knowledge is vast. I would definitely recommend them, as they are 100% trustworthy, I just give them my keys and walk away, knowing that my place will be clean, tidy and safe when I return.
