Rear Extension Build in March, Cambridgeshire

Full Build Management From Demolition to Final Fit-Out

We delivered a full rear kitchen extension in March, Cambridgeshire. We acted as main contractor from demolition right through to the finished interior. The project ran from September 2025 to February 2026. Over that time, we removed the existing rear extension and rebuilt the structure from the ground up. We also coordinated every specialist trade involved. As a result, our client had one point of contact throughout and a build that progressed smoothly from start to finish.

Demolition and Site Preparation

Every extension build starts with clear planning and safe preparation. So, we began by removing the existing kitchen extension and bay window to open up the site.

Next, groundworks got underway. The groundworker dug and poured the footings and installed a new waste pipe. We then put in a block and beam floor system. This gave the new extension a strong and stable base to build from.

Structural Build and Trade Coordination

As main contractor, we coordinated each trade at the right stage of the build. First, a bricklayer completed the external brickwork and coping stones. Scaffolding then went up so the parapet wall could be brought to height safely.

After that, a qualified engineer installed the structural steelwork. This supported the new opening and roof structure. Once the steels were in, we constructed the timber roof framework ourselves. Throughout this stage, we managed sequencing, safety and quality control on site.

Roof Construction and Insulation

With the structural framework in place, we moved on to the roof. We laid ply boarding and installed 100mm of insulation. Then we added a second layer of ply on top. This created a solid, well-insulated base ready for the warm roofing system.

Finally, the roofer completed the external finish. This made the structure fully watertight and ready for interior work.

Interior Fit-Out and Finishing

Once the structure was complete, we moved inside. We fitted the new kitchen and utility room, taking care with every detail. We also laid a herringbone wood floor throughout, which adds a lot of warmth and character to the finished space.

Meanwhile, plumbers, electricians and decorators completed their work under our supervision. Overall, the result is a well-finished interior that came together well because every trade was properly coordinated from the start.

Acting as Main Contractor

This rear extension involved structural work, multiple trades and a full interior renovation. So, acting as main contractor meant our client had a single point of responsibility throughout the entire build.

In practice, that meant we scheduled every trade, managed the structural sequencing and oversaw quality control. We also kept communication clear at every stage. Renovations can feel overwhelming to manage alone. Therefore, our role was not just to build but to take that pressure off the client entirely.
